Why can't my midget find the gold I have hidden?

I just ordered a midget and received it via FedEx. The website said that the one I ordered had a 10% bonus on finding gold. I decided to test this by putting a gold bar under my bed, but I can't get him to search for it. All he does is rummages my cabinets and eats anything in site, followed by extreme belching. He also rips any clothing off that I put on him. The stun baton that the website included doesn't knock him out either. He just giggles at it. What do I do? HELP!
